PlDuel1 - A Man Called Sun

Abandoned arena somewhere in Egypt, where ancient ruins meet modern technology.

Rather small level with no place for hide and seek, but definately with a space for fast and furious action - you will be running knee-deep in dead and... in a sand. RailGun won't save you this time ;-)

About myself:
In "a real life" I study Information Technologies at Technical University of Szczecin and I keep telling myself I need to start learning for real. Of course it always only my willingness beacuse I've got many more interesting things to do in life - besides private matters I spend a lot of time on mapping, designing websites, writing articles to some of those websites, playing soccer (amateur skill), listening to music, going to gigs, etc.
I make levels for about seven years, though my first map was released in the net in 2002. Well, I'm not too efficient - when my map needs only polishing and minor fixes I already have an idea for another level so that unfinished one goes to a "waiting room". So that is why there are only three finished levels in my portfolio. I've got a feeling it won't change anytime soon because I currently work on levels for "Painkiller" and you can't do anything for this game "fast".
My successes? Well, one of my unfinished maps won in "Best Level Design" category of "LevelSource 1024" competition and another level won "Polish Mappers Challenge". I also recieved few good reviews and had a great time making maps - that's also a success :)

There it is!!!

Lukin about Szczecin:
Kind of strange city, there are many good things here and quite many bad things too, but recently there are more of those good things so I can't really complain.

Behind the scenes

PlDuel1 PlDuel1

The idea behind the map was very simple: one central arena and complex web of hallways around. To make the level bigger I enlarged (quite a lot) one side-room and in this way the most beautiful part of a map arised (the hall with the view at pyramids). But generally I was focused on a gameplay, it took me some time before I started to make visual part of the map (one of the screenshot above shows how "A Man Called Sun" had looked then).
I had plans to make all textures by myself because I wanted to make level in Egyptian theme but with no overworked texture set. I made few attempts, but finished trying when I saw what Rorshack made with Egypt - well, his textures are simply the best, I had to use them :)
After beta-testing I removed some teleports from the map and made jumping for Red Armor easier - I sometimes regret I did it because previous way to get RA was really cool, unfortunately it was killing the flow too much.
The title "A Man Called Sun" is taken from a song played by the band The Verve. Really nice song and its title fits to Egyptian environment.
